Why We Celebrate Karwa Chauth?
The festival is most prominentin the North and North Western regions of our country. A huge population of the male population of these regions earlier were the soldiers of the Indian Army and officials of the Military Forces. It is believed by some that women of these regions started fasting in order to pray for their husband’s lives these armed forces, policemen, soldiers, and military personnel who protected the nation from foreign attack were respected and tributed by their wives. The wives used to pray to the god for the longevity of their men. The time of this competition coincides with the initiation of the Rabi cropping season that is the wheat sowing season in those regions. The women of the families fill the earthen pot also called Karwa with wheat grains and offer to the God also praying for a great Rabi season.
The Story of Karwa: There was a woman named Karwa. She was deeply in love with her husband and this intense love endowed her with lots of spiritual powers. Once her husband was bathing in a river. He was when he was attacked by a crocodile. Now the courageous Karwa bound the crocodile with cotton yarn. She remembered Yama, the Lord of death. Yama was afraid of being cursed by such a devoted wife and thus he sent the crocodile to hell and gave back life to her husband.
